Guys. I’m in love. Like a deep, soul crushing love. Sorry Tim, it’s not you this time (still love you the most though). Harbour House / La Parada is the latest addition to the Constantia Nek restaurant strip, and the latest addition to my list of obsessions. This place is just… wow. Everything I look for in a dining experience, this place ticks all my discerning boxes.

I hate my floors. There, I said it. I mean, they’re brand new and we chose them and we oversaw the entire thing, but I hate them. They’re too… grey. And tiled. And just grey tiles. Gross. So I’m on a mission to cover them up in the most affordable way possible and this DIY Rope Coil Mat is one such way to distract from the eyesore that is our flooring.

As you know, we just celebrated our first wedding anniversary! We also just happened to be invited to a slew of newly launched restaurants, so we decided to extend the celebrations for a few days, being treated to a different dinner each night! First up was an utterly divine dinner at the newly launched Italian eatery, Blanko in the iconic Alphen Hotel, Constantia. Transformed from the 5 Rooms Restaurant before it, Blanko is an all-white, blank canvas (hence the name) for incredible, unfussy yet beautiful food and astonishing artworks.

Today is our first wedding anniversary. I suppose it’s time I told this happy/sad story here, despite the fact that I’ve tried exclusively to keep this blog my ‘happy place’. In doing so though, I’ve found much of what I say can be aseptic and without the backbone of truth that goes behind every word. So forgive the heavy topic today, but I’d rather you knew me as I really am.

Gnocchi is one of those foods that I feel like I could’ve grown up eating but never did. It’s like home in a bowl, and sadly I was only introduced to it in adulthood – I know. Ridic. It’s everything you could ever love in one dish – wholesome, nourishing comfort food that’s just like a big old hug… and potatoes. I mean come on. Even better is this global move to one-pot cooking that I’m ALL about – less dishes, less washing up, less water wastage – win-win. This is one such dish that involves heaps of luscious green seasonal veg, lashings of Grana Padano and moreish dumplings of perfect Italian gnocchi, all tumbled through with cream. Yup. Heaven.

Last Saturday night hubs and I were invited to sample and review the newly opened The Mess in Green Point, Cape Town. With such a strange name, we were intrigued, but it turns out that a mess is the last thing you’ll find here. Considered and contemporary decor, extremely flavourful curated dishes and attentive staff make this a very well-rounded culinary experience.

I’m just gonna come right out and say it: I may have struck gold with this one. I’d barely had a bite of my own slice when I caught hubs trying to steal another piece from my plate after he’d had HALF a pizza already! I really just experimented with this zucchini crusted pizza – made some mistakes, fixed them, made more mistakes, fixed those, and was quite surprised at how unbelievably delicious this was! And hello, zero carbs! Zucchinis are currently competing with aubergines for first place on my Favourite Vegetable Ever in the Universe list.
I’ve included here the mistakes I made so you can avoid them yourself, and hopefully you’ll have on your hands the crowd-pleaser that I’ve had. Aside from being stupid-easy, the only bit of multitasking you’ll need is stirring with one hand while staving off the ravenous fiends with the other. Good luck.
